On your Journey of Recovery you might want to think about some things as you build up your new life in recovery. What I am getting at is the holistic approach to recovery that can help you to realize a fuller life in recovery overall; in fact, many addicts start this process or journey in a holistic drug rehab.
Holistic approach to drug addiction recovery
In the beginning, we need to focus. It is hard to stay clean and sober. No one is disputing this. So, it makes sense to really focus all of your efforts on simply staying clean when you are early in your recovery.
Ok this is all good but what about when you have 2 years clean? And 5 years clean? And 10 years clean? Is it really just as hard to stay clean and sober after these periods of time as it was when you had 2 weeks sober?
No, of course it is different. There is still a possibility of relapse, any recovering addict is just one drink or a drug away from a relapse. That will always be true of course. But after you are living the solution, after you are living a clean and sober life, eventually the focus must shift with the journey of recovery.
Instead of just trying to avoid drugs and alcohol each day, you have to be a bit more proactive than that. It is no longer enough to merely avoid using. Now, you have to create the life you always wanted.
Now, you have to create the life that your higher power intended for you. That means that you need to reach out to others in some way and help them. Maybe you share at 12 step meetings, or maybe you connect with people in your family or within your circle of friends. Or maybe you help people through your day job. Or maybe you take meetings into jails and institutions. Whatever.
How to use a holistic approach for drug addiction help and treatment
You might also use a more holistic approach for your drug addiction treatment because the longer you are clean. For example, you might watch what you eat or start employing some fitness tips in your life in order to be healthier overall.
Drug addiction recovery is a long but, rewarding process. Each day is one step closer to a recovery from drug addiction, however, it is a process that must be completed in steps. It is crucial that someone beginning recovery realize what lies ahead in order to maintain or help loved ones maintain their sobriety.
Before recovery from drug addiction can begin, the body will need to undergo a detox. Detoxing from drugs is important to physically prepare the body for the recovery process. When someone is addicted to drugs, their body becomes accustomed to having the drugs on a regular basis, detoxing is the process of removing the drugs from the body. It is a physically difficult, but crucial part of the process. During detox the person will experience severe body pains, headaches, nausea and insomnia. Not everyone experiences the exact same symptoms, however, some or all detox symptoms can be expected.
Recovery from drug addiction, will require the person to completely change their living habits, which may include changing jobs, homes and/or school. Part of the recovery process is to remove the addict from the places and people where they consumed the drugs. If the person undergoes detox and sobriety, but returns to their old environment, it will be extremely difficult to continue with recovery.
Drug addiction recovery is a life long process. There will be cravings from time to time, however, when the addict is encouraged through family, friends and groups with support for their recovery, it does help them remain sober.
