Overcoming Alcohol Addiction without relapsing is Not an Easy Road

The battle to overcoming alcohol addiction is not an easy one. An intervention may be something that can help, though many times the addicted individual may feel as though he or she is being attacked. In addition to intervention there are also treatments and treatment facilities that are useful, and now there is even a medicine the individual can take to help erase their need for alcohol.

Learning how to stop drinking and overcoming alcohol addiction is not easy

The person with the drinking problem or alcohol addiction may try and tell you things like they plan on stopping real soon forever but keep in mind how many times you have heard this same old song and dance before. It may be time to try another approach; for example, An alcohol intervention is a group of family members and friends that get together under the guise of something like a surprise party.

Once everyone, especially the addicted individual, is comfortable and everyone is having fun, this is when someone turns off the music and lets the addicted individual know that they are all there to help him or her and that everyone is willing to do whatever it takes to help that person overcome his or her addiction.

Many times, the alcohol addicted individual will feel railroaded and ask everyone to leave, but this is because the individual is not ready to get better. The intervention acts as a stimulus, and nothing more, to help the individual to see that his or her addiction is not just affecting him-or herself, but that it affects everyone around him or her.

Once the individual makes his or her own decision to quit drinking and get treatment, there are many options. There are meetings he or she can go to, there are outpatient services, and many in-house treatment centers that will help him or her on the road to recovery.

In addition to the above remedies, there is also now a pill one can take that erases the desire for alcohol. The way it works is by creating a barrier in the brain to the receptor that receives the impulse for alcohol consumption. The individual may still drink, but the effects that it will have on him or her, such as impulsive vomiting, will quickly help to deter the individual from deciding to drink again. I have know a couple of people that used this medication it is called Antabuse and it works the guy I knew that was on it decided he was going to have a drink one day and it made him puke his guts out.

Now I am pretty sure this will make a person not want to drink but in my opinion the drinking is just part of the problem; for instance lets say we have a horse thief with a drinking problem and he stops drinking you will have a sober horse thief. We need to change the way we think and do things in order to really recover.
