Four Steps to Help an Alcoholic or Drug Addict Get Over Addiction
A lot of people research on the topic: “How to help an alcoholic or drug addict” when it comes to the task of helping a drug addict or an alcoholic get rid of their addiction. Now, the task of beating an addiction to alcohol or drugs does not call for a unique formula, a heavily guarded secret or special intellect. It is all about knowing the right things to do.
The key to successfully helping an addict or alcoholic recover from addiction
· It is a must that the newly recovering person live an environment where they will be no drinking or drug activity
· Do not keep throwing the past in their face they will have enough to do just trying to stay clean as it is
· It is also necessary for that a person get rid of there old using members this means deleting their phone numbers you may also need to change your phone number as well. I would make sure I did this before leaving rehab.
In order to help the addict, you should provide a safe and supportive environment to help them to turn over a new leaf in life. This means that if you consume alcohol that you should not do so in front of them and as an extra precaution I would not leave any bottles visible to them either.
Being negative is not something that is going to help during this crucial time when the individual is already battling inner demons. In order to help the person out, you must first evoke the desire to quit in them. Talk with them about the things they used to enjoy doing before addiction started to control their lives. It is only when you evoke a strong desire in the person that you will be able to assist him/her in this difficult process.
In order to help an alcoholic defeat drug addiction or alcoholism you must ask him/her to stay away from booze and drugs. Not only this, it is also essential for the person to avoid going to gatherings that encourages the intake of such substances for example, clubs, bars, and drinking friend’s because this is what you will have to do to stay clean and sober.
This may not be easy for some because they also need to severe relationships with friends who are drug or booze addicts and they may have a difficult time doing this but to overcome addiction it must be done.
Getting rid of alcoholism or drug addiction requires immense desire to beat addiction. Therefore if you feel that you cannot help the other people get over their addiction then you can consider enrolling them in a rehab center if they are willing.
Residential treatment and addiction recovery tools
The care that rehab centers provide such as residential treatment is very much needed for these types of people. Besides, there will be qualified experts out there who would be doing their best to help pull addicts out of the crisis; furthermore in rehab they will be in treatment with a lot of others just like themselves that want to learn how to stop drinking and using drugs.
If a person goes to rehab with the right mindset they will learn a lot while in residential treatment; for example, every one will learn a new set of addiction recovery tools. One of them will be how to deal with triggers which may cause them to use. They will also attend one on one substance abuse counseling. To me this is one of the most import steps in recovery because you can share with your therapist and not be judged everything that you feel you can not share with your family or others.
Good luck

My daughter is being released after a 28 day inpatient treatment for pain pill addiction. She is 26 and lives with a friend. How can I help support her during her recovery? I have attended Al Anon meetings, read many books, attended classes at the rehab center. Should I ask her every time I speak with her if she is attending outpatient care and N/A? Should I ask her if she has talked with her sponsor?
Hi Karen
I would not ask her every time if she is attending mtgs. she may feel pressured but ask once in a while. You could offer to drive her to a mtg or you could both go to an open meeting where non addicts can attend too.
Just let her know that she is loved and you are there for her and tell here that we are all pulling for her and she can do it, rehab has given her all the recovery tools she will need all she has to do is use them.
Good luck and God bless
