How to overcome Addiction to Pain Medication and stop drug abuse
A person can easily acquire an addiction to pain medication. Most people who experience pain will take over the counter pain relievers. Sometimes the over the counter pain relievers do not work, and so a trip to the doctor is needed.
Upon seeing a doctor, many times the doctor will provide a prescription to a pain medication. Pain medications are very effective, yet highly addictive since a person builds up a tolerance to them so fast. When a tolerance is built up to pain medication, a person will need more of the pain medication to relieve their pain.
A lot of times this increase of medication will lead a person to become dependent upon the prescription pain reliever. When a person starts abusing to prescription pain killer medication, they will do what they can to find a doctor who will give them more of the prescribed pain medication in order to maintain their painkiller addiction.
How to overcome pain medication addiction
If a doctor will not prescribe more pain medication, then a person will likely “shop around” until they find a doctor who will prescribe the pain medication. Many people who are addicted to pain medications try to stop or at least cut down the use of prescription pain medication, but their attempts to do so are usually unsuccessful.
In the event that a person becomes addicted to pain medication, he or she should seek help for their addiction immediately.
Now if you are addicted to painkillers that you got from your family phisician my suggestion is to let them know right away because they will be able to help you before things get worse and the wheel falls off. If there is nothing they can do but taper you off and this does not work they will know where to send you to get more drug addiction help should you need it.
The first thing you may want to do is fill your Dr. in on what is going on. They may have a solution to help you with your addiction to pain medications or may know where you can go to get help.
Now if you have been getting your pain killers from several doctors and do not wish to discuss your addiction with them there is another alternative but this way is not easy and very few actually make it. What I am talking about here is to taper yourself off of what ever pain medication you have been abusing.
How to stop painkiller addiction
Lets say for example you are taking 10 vicodin a day you could try taking nine the next day and if you are comfortable with this reduce one pill per day until you are down to nothing. If you do it like this you can avoid any major vicodin withdrawal symptoms from occurring.
Regardless of how you intend to stop using painkillers does not matter what matters is that you do it whether it be by tapering or going to an opiate addiction rehab.
Good luck
