How many people think of Addiction as a Disease

by artc on December 29, 2010

When we try to examine addiction as a disease we would like to think that it makes an addict believe that he/she needs a drug or substance in order to function normally, and it can influence others into thinking the same thing, if they are not careful.

Just like most other diseases, it can be treated with the proper medication, program, support system, or all the above. The key to effectively curing the disease depends on the person.

An addict must be willing and submissive to all treatment in order to rid him/herself of the disease. In most cases, this is never easy, but with help, anyone can make it through treatment. It is important for everyone to know that you do not entirely rid yourself of the disease its more like we put it in check or in other words arrest it when we remain abstinent.

There are many types of addictions a person can experience such as alcohol addiction, drugs, gambling, shopping, smoking, and much more. Not all of them require medication or some type of rehabilitation program, but a person must have the desire and will to kick these addictions.

Having these addictions can lead to spending all of your money, stealing, lying, taking advantage of others, and ruining relationships. A person may even experience some sort of negative view of themselves. Drug Addiction can be extremely damaging to your health as well, and even cause death.

Keep in mind that all of these addictions can be overcome but you will have to work at it if you are to succeed no addiction is ever that easy to beat or it would not be an addiction now would it.

There are many things that can affect whether a person becomes addicted to something, including their environment and their genetics. If your family has a history of addiction, then there is a strong possibility that you will too, if you’re not careful.

There are often times when a person may use their addiction in order to deal with pressures in their life or to fit in socially. Although, you will find that many times a person will not admit that they have a problem. This is normal, and until they can readly admit this there is little, you or anyone else will be able to do to help them to stop drug abuse.

Is addiction really a disease

In my opinion there are not all that many people out there who think there is a disease of alcoholism or drug addiction and this includes recovering drug addicts. Some drug addicts have a hard time admitting they are addicted to drugs let alone attaching another label to their addiction and calling it a disease. Now keep in mind that the medical field recognizes the disease.

When I first attempted to stop drug abuse I have to admit considering whether drug addiction was a disease required doing a lot of thinking and asking a lot of questions on the subject. In the end I found out that it does not really matter what you call it as long as you know you have a problem with using them and you are doing something about it then that’s all that really matters.

If you are new to recovery do not let the disease concept botther you because at this point the main thing you should be thinking about is how you will stay sober just for today. So in other words it just does not matter as long as you understand that you have a problem.

I think addiction is a disease, but only to a certain extent. It is hard to classify actually because it seems as if no other “disease” out there really has a treatment anything close to the spiritual solution that is typically used for substance abuse. It almost seems like the treatment for addiction must make it something other than a disease.

On the other hand, I am an addict, and I definitely did not give my permission for this to happen! So maybe it is a disease.
