Many recovering addicts worry about their ability to stay clean and sober after rehab. This is a common fear that is reasonable to have. There are some strategies that can be used to help get you through this difficult transition. While the goal is to stay clean, understand that many people relapse before finding success. Should this happen to you, do not give up.
How to stay clean after substance addiction treatment
One of the best ways to stay sober after treatment is to move away from old temptations. This often requires some radical lifestyle changes. These changes include moving to a new neighborhood, associating with new friends, and avoiding certain areas. Many people end up erasing their entire cell phone contact list to avoid temptation. Some people will need to find new jobs. While these changes may seem frightening, remember that sobriety is a chance to rebuild a new and fulfilling life.
Rediscovering old interests can also help. Many recovering addicts feel empty, especially those who have been addicted for a number of years. Think about old hobbies or pastimes you once enjoyed. For example, an addict may have played on a football team before falling into addiction. Other hobbies like painting, music, or running are also common.
What you can do to stay clean after leaving drug rehab
· Stay away from old using friends
· I would also suggest that you delete all your contacts from your phone
· Some may want to relocate
· Try doing some things you used to enjoy like old hobbies
How you can overcome the temptation of using alcohol or drugs after rehab
It is still possible to engage in these activities. They can be used to help build your character and identity. They can also be used as coping mechanisms when you feel depressed or anxious.
Or you can take up something that you always wanted to do. Maybe take a college class or two and if you really want to do this you may want to do like I did and go for a degree. When I got clean and sober I went back to school and was accepted into the Social Work program I am currently getting close to graduating with a bachelors degree.
Staying sober without drinking or using drugs
Do not be afraid, there are plenty of amazing experiences to be had while you are clean and sober. Eliminate temptation and discover new interests to remain sober after treatment. Work through the difficult times and build a meaningful life. It is possible to become happy joyous and free in drug addiction recovery.
One other option that many recovering addicts do is attend 12 step meetings like alcoholics anonymous or narcotics anonymous. This is a great way to make some new friends and stay clean at the same time. I attend NA meetings myself.
It is very important everyone who wants to overcome their addiction to take massive action after leaving alcoholism treatment by this I mean attending as many meetings as you can a day. When I first quit drinking I had no idea whatsoever to do with my time so sometimes I would attend three meetings a day. I would suggest this to anyone who truly wants to beat addiction.
Now if you really want to recover from drug addiction or alcoholism I would suggest that you go to 90 meetings in 90 days get a sponsor and start doing things with other recovering addicts. I did this myself and I can not stress this enough how important it is to change ones old habits and at the same time gaining some new friends that you can actually trust. I have found that other addicts in the NA program are willing to go out on a limb for anyone if they are trying to stop using. How many of your using buddies would come to visit you if you landed in the hospital or jail probably ”NONE!”
Good luck and God bless
