Now days there are a lot of ways for an addict to go through heroin detox. There are private rehabs where one can be medically detoxed from heroin or you can kick heroin cold turkey in the privacy of your own home while you are watching DVD’s but I would not recommend this route unless you have no other options. If this the case for you you will want to follow these steps.
How to detox from heroin at home
The first step is to get a friend or loved one to come stay with you while you detox from heroin at home. They can support you I believe this will make you stronger and not give up those that go it alone normally fail before the end of the first day.
Step 2
Is going to be to try and stay awake for two days straight before you begin your detox. My hope for you is that this will help you to sleep through the painful part of heroin withdrawal.
Step 3
Is to go to the drug store for some over the counter medications that may assist you with your detox. I would defiantly get some Motrin they will help with leg cramps and restless leg syndrome. I would get some Benadryl just in case you are still unable to sleep. Most people that kick heroin also have bouts of diarrhea so get some medicine with Imodium in it.
For those that can’t afford conventional treatment you may qualify for a state funded or free drug rehab
Then there are free drug rehabs for some people that qualify so it may be worth doing the work to find one keep in mind that I am just letting you know that they are out there but its your job to locate them.
Heroin detox
The best option there is for heroine detox in my opinion can be done in a heroin rehab. The type of heroin addiction rehab I would look for is one that has a medical detox and residential treatment combined.
Once there all of your needs will be looked after by a trained medical staff. They will administer prescription medications such as suboxone to help ease the pain of heroine withdrawal. For the most part this procedure is relatively painless once the medications you are given take effect. Nothing is really required of you while you are in detox so try to relax as much as you can.
When you are finished with your detox from heroine which will be in approximately 4 or 5 days you will enter residential treatment. There you will meet a lot of others just like yourself who are trying to stop using one kind of drug or another. While there you will be required to attend 12 step meetings, group, lectures, and individual counseling. Residential treatment can be any where from 2 to 3 weeks long. I would recommend that you pay attention to what they are trying to teach you because it may very well your life when you leave rehab.
I would also have a plan in place for when you leave treatment. This can consist of when and where you plan on attending meetings or individual drug addiction therapy. Without an after care plan you are doomed to fail and it will end miserably in relapse. If you do use again please do not hesitate to get back in treatment for another heroin detox if you need too. It takes many of us more than one try to get it right I know it did me for sure.
